Through evidence of the various 'Ecologies in Action' tested through the process of our live enquiry we address the questions:

ECOLOGIES: How does the coexistence, coinciding and mutual conditioning of different practices enable/enhance aesthetic thinking? Exploring connectivity and collectivity - how might we bring different practices into relation?

TRAJECTORY III (MARCH - OCTOBER 2022)

Ecology in Action: (20.10.2022)

An Ecology in Action practised live in the context of the Alliances and Commonalities conference, hosted online by Stockholm University of the Arts.

Practices are not disclosed at the outset of practising.

An undisclosed number of practices which are not identified in advance (other than being ‘not new’ - ie. they already described through "scores" in SINGLE PRACTICES), are practised as three explorations (by 3 different persons).

Format/Focus: A 50-minute unstructured Ecology

Notes

* The Practice of Transcription had multiple sources, including the conversation taking place on the morning of 18.10.2022 as a reflection on the previous Ecology-in-Action (17.10.2022), alongside listening to the live practices.

* The Practice of Reading uses as its source text the transcription of the Ecology in Action from 17.10.2022 + 18.10.2022.

This Ecology extends the focus of previous Ecologies including: How to practice with heightened awareness or sensitivity to the mode of attentiveness/connection between practices (See details in previous Ecologies)

Following the Ecology we retrospectively declared that the following practices had been activated:

Practices in alphabetical order

- Practice of Exploratory Essay Writing (Live Writing) or even renamed as Practice of Very Slow Observation through the medium of written language

- Practice of Explorative Drawing

- Practice of Material Encounter

- Practice of Reading: Noticing Attraction and Distillation (Text source:  Transcript from previous Ecology in Action 17.10.2022)

- Practice of Stepping Back

- Practice of Transcription

- Practice of Very Slow Video Observation or even renamed as Practice of Very Slow Observation in the medium of video

- Practice of Voicing Observation

Format/Focus: A 50-minute unstructured Ecology

This Ecology extends the focus of previous Ecologies including: How to practice with heightened awareness or sensitivity to the mode of attentiveness/connection between practices: (A) Separation (autonomy) – that is, to practice in isolation from others’ practice, by not being affected or in touch with the other practices, but rather highly immersed/absorbed by their singular practice; (B) Parallel (Open, in Touch) – that is, to practice with awareness and openness to others’ practices but not directly interacting with them.(C) Interwoven (interaction) – that is, to be influenced by and interact with others' practices, open to affecting and being affected by the others’ practices and practising. (D) Observation/stepping out (fully other regarding): to fully attend through observation to the others' practices.

The action of 'taping' was continued to signal/differentiate between a voiced practice (including Reading, Voiced Observation, Conversation) [indicated through a paper mask/tape; and Stepping Out or an 'inactive' screen which would be solid black.

Following the Ecology we retrospectively declared that the following practices had been activated:

Some new variations were introduced within this specific Ecology, including a increase from 5 to 6 separate screens/devices, and the introduction of 'taping' to signal/differentiate between a voiced practice (including Reading, Voiced Observation, Conversation) [indicated through a paper mask/tape; and Stepping Out or an 'inactive' screen which would be solid black.

Following the Ecology we retrospectively declared that the following practices had been activated:

Ecology in Action: (13.09.2022, PM)

Practices are not disclosed at the outset of practising.

An undisclosed number of practices which are not identified in advance (other than being ‘not new’ - ie. they already described through "scores" in SINGLE PRACTICES), are practised as three explorations (by 3 different persons).

Format/Focus: A 50-minute unstructured Ecology.

Following the 2 previous Ecologies (conceived as kinds of ‘training’ for attending to the mode of relation/connection), in this Ecology the focus was to practice with heightened awareness or sensitivity to the mode of relation/connection: (A) Separation (autonomy) – that is, to practice in isolation from others’ practice, by not being affected or in touch with the other practices, but rather highly immersed/absorbed by their singular practice; (B) Parallel (Open, in Touch) – that is, to practice with awareness and openness to others’ practices but not directly interacting with them.(C) Interwoven (interaction) – that is, to be influenced by and interact with others' practices, open to affecting and being affected by the others’ practices and practising.

Ecology in Action: (13.09.2022, AM)

Practices are not disclosed at the outset of practising.

An undisclosed number of practices which are not identified in advance (other than being ‘not new’ - ie. they already described through "scores" in SINGLE PRACTICES), are practised as three explorations (by 3 different persons).

Format/Focus: A 40-minute semi-structured Ecology.

Mode of relation/connection: The structuring focus/principle for this Ecology is an enquiry into the modality, attitude or intention of relation or connection practised within the Ecology and (1) To explore how these different modes are experienced within the same practice; (2) To become sensitized to  the various modes and how they are experienced. Within a period of 40 minutes each researcher agrees to transition through different modes or attitudes of connection from (C) Interwoven (interaction) – that is, to be influenced by and interact with others' practices, open to affecting and being affected by the others’ practices and practising; (A) Separation (autonomy) – that is, to practice in isolation from others’ practice, by not being affected or in touch with the other practices, but rather highly immersed/absorbed by their singular practice; (B) Parallel (Open, in Touch) – that is, to practice with awareness and openness to others’ practices but not directly interacting with them.

Organisation: No set time cues are set for transitioning from one mode/attitude of connection to another. An agreement is made to follow the sequence (C, A, B) and that this sequence is undertaken only once. Each researcher transitions from one mode/attitude of connection to the next (in sequence), spontaneously as ‘called’ by the unfolding Ecology in Action.

Ecology in Action: (12.09.2022)

Practices are not disclosed at the outset of practising.

An undisclosed number of practices which are not identified in advance (other than being ‘not new’ - ie. they already described through "scores" in SINGLE PRACTICES), are practised as three explorations (by 3 different persons).

Format/Focus: A 45-minute semi-structured Ecology.

Mode of relation/connection: The structuring principle for this Ecology is an enquiry into the modality, attitude or intention of relation or connection practised within the Ecology and (1) How/if the mode of connection/relation creates conditions for aesthetic thinking; how the mode of connection is constitutive for aesthetic thinking; (2) If/how the mode of connection is an emergent property of an Ecology or how/whether it can be conceived as a structuring principle to be actively explored. Within a period of 45 minutes each researcher agrees to transition through different modes or attitudes of connection from (A) Separation (autonomy) – that is, to practice in isolation from others’ practice, by not being affected or in touch with the other practices, but rather highly immersed/absorbed by their singular practice; (B) Parallel (Open, in Touch) – that is, to practice with awareness and openness to others’ practices but not directly interacting with them; (C) Interwoven (interaction) – that is, to be influenced by and interact with others' practices, open to affecting and being affected by the others’ practices and practising.

Organisation: No set time cues are set for transitioning from one mode/attitude of connection to another. An agreement is made to follow the sequence (A, B, C) and that this sequence is undertaken only once. Each researcher transitions from one mode/attitude of connection to the next (in sequence), spontaneously as ‘called’ by the unfolding Ecology in Action.

Ecology in Action: (08.07.2022)

Practices in alphabetical order

- Practice of Conversation-as-Material

- Practice of Exploratory Essay Writing (Live Writing + Voiced)

- Practice of Explorative Drawing

- Practice of Material Encounter

- Practice of Observation (Live Writing + Voiced)

- Practice of Reading: Noticing Attraction and Distillation (Text source:  Transcript from previous Ecology in Action 07.07.2022)

- Practice of Stepping Back

- Practice of Transcription

- Practice of Very Slow Video Observation

- Practice of Video Observation from Physical Source

10 practices in total, practised as three parallel explorations (by 3 different persons) with points of connection. Some of these practices have defined variations e.g. Practice of Observation (Variations: Live Writing + Voiced), Practice of Material Encounter (mediated by sound and/or by video)

Format: Semi-structured format: To explore moving from a structured exploration (with an agreed beginning of named practices) to an unstructured exploration within a 75-minute timeframe. Agreed to begin with 2 practices (with variations) activated by 3 persons: Practice of Material Encounter (with sound focus); Practice of Material Encounter (with video focus) and Practice of Reading (Noticing Attraction [major] and Distillation [minor]). From there the invitation was to move spontaneously from and between practices as ‘called’ by the practice and unfolding Ecology in Action. Attend also to the relation of one's own practice as an 'ecology', an ecology within an ecology. The option of stopping or continuing within the Ecology in Action is also proposed which we now call the Practice of Stepping Back. A further structural component was proposed: that if there is a ‘call’ for the Practice of Conversation-as-Material, we respond. We proposed that this practice could take place at an approximately half-way point, as a way of re-energising/refocusing.

Additional Focus:

* In practising, exploring the relation between being-in-touch (being-with) other practices and being-apart (practising autonomously).

* Consider the compatibility and incompatibility of practices, and whether/how this compatibility or incompatibility enables or inhibits aesthetic thinking

* Consider the relation of how aesthetic thinking is practised within an individual’s practice and how it is practised within the overall Ecology – and if/how this relation is causal.

Note:

* Practice of conversation (Focus/referent) - The experience of practising within the Ecology in Action (directly) and aesthetic thinking (indirectly).

* Practice of Observation (Voiced + Live Writing) (Focus/referent) - The experience of practising within the Ecology in Action (directly) and aesthetic thinking (indirectly).

* Practice of Exploratory Essay Writing (Focus/referent) - The experience of aesthetic thinking (directly) and practising within the Ecology in Action (indirectly).

* Practice of Transcription has multi sources as reference (including listening to the recording of the Ecology in Action from 18.05.2022, alongside listening to the live practices).
