SAR SIG Group (core group of 4, total of 9 peers/ participants)
In the SAR (Society of Artistic Research) SIG (Special Interest Group) I organize an international research group around the essay in pedagogy. In this research group we discuss and map the position of the essay in pedagogy and speculate about the collective potential of essaying. We exchange practices and develop workshops.

2: Essay characteristics: Literature analyses - word cloud
This is a literature analyses of theorizations on the essay form, mostly form literature studies, philosophy, and film studies. But I also use fragments from research articles in other fields where the essay is described. This analysis is noting down all the characteristics as keywords in a quantitative manner. These keywords are put in an excel sheet with references, the keywords are clustered and visualized in the Research Catalogue as a word cloud. Every word get a number (bumber of references), the higher the umber, the bigger the word. This way there will be clusters of words that characterize the essay in a pluriform manner instead of distilling it to a limiting singular description.
I am also noting down ‘non-characteristics’; what is the essay not. And noting down metaphors being used to describe essays. Perhaps these will be relevant later on in the research.
after making an inventory of the keywords, I will add literature to those keywords from other fields by creating associative keywords in italic:
