REPORTS

Proposed in the research plan

Achieved or adjusted

1.1 Mapping the fields and defining the terms

Mapping and positioning the research in the artistic and theoretical fields, namely the essay, artistic research,

performance, philosophy of science, (research) communities.

Milestone: Mapping of the research fields and terms

Mapping core characteristics

Started with mapping characteristics (It was on the planning for year 2 but moved it up). It seems more logical to start with theoretically investigating the core research topic; the essay, and after that venture into artistic research, performance and research communities where relevant in relation to my core topic. Now, it also seems more relevant to focus on lecture performances and not to focus on philosophy of science. I added data/archive management tools in the research. After the theoretical mapping I will focus on case studies.

Milestone: Map: Essaying – Characteristics (ongoing)

Milestone: Map: Essaying - Literature overview (ongoing)

1.1 Mapping ethics: using the ELIA guidelines for mapping ethics of the research. These insights are also relevant as a first step into

engaging in a diverse research community.

Milestone: Mapping of ethics

Mapping ethics

Proposed to use the ELIA guidelines for an ethics scan in PhD research, but added the PD course on Ethics, the DPC course on scientific integrity and together with the data management steward I will also hand in the Fontys Ethics scan and Data Management plan.

Milestone: Ethics mapping (ongoing)

Milestone: PD course Ethics

Milestone: DPC course Scientific Integrity

1.2 Positioning the self

Framework and educational tool for positioning the

‘self’

Milestone: Framework for personal and artistic positioning

Mapping personal position

I used the personal positioning as part of the mapping:

Positioning the self. The main keywords in the theory mapping so far, is ‘personal’ so this positioning sees more relevant now.

Milestone: Personal Positioning map (ongoing)

Essaying as mapping tool

I did not make a framework for positioning the self (yet) nor a lecture performance on positioning (yet), instead it seemed more logical to map the personal positioning in this stage of the research. I will continue with the personal mapping in order to create a tool/framework. At this stage it seems most relevant to myself, and as input for topical lecture performances.

To make it broader, I created a framework for Essayistic mapping, which is the first step building up to the final output: Output: Framework for essaying as collective performative practice. It was on the planning for year 2 but moved it up.

Milestone: Essaying as educational tool- Peer-reviewed Article LKCA

Milestone: Essaying as educational tool- Workshop Hanze and SAR Forum

Milestone: Essay in the University- event series with NICA and Leiden University

2.2 Artistic research – on positioning (preliminary title)

Milestone: Lecture performance – on positioning

Instead of doing a lecture performance on positioning, I developed the topical lecture performance – On Pitbulls.

Milestone: Mapping – On Pitbulls (ongoing)

Milestone: Lecture performance – On Pitbulls (ongoing)

- On Pitbull’s and education (public lecture performance)

- On Pitbull’s and politics (public lecture performance)

1.3 Inner circle interaction

Milestone: collaborative essayistic lecture performance

Most changes have occurred here, because I did not restrict the interaction to the inner circle. I am building up a network to research collective essaying, rather than immediately creating an artistic output. The division in circles also seemed less relevant.

Inner circle:

I had conversations with critical friends Jord, Milo and Bart, they all seem most relevant for topic 2: on relation(ship)s. Though Milo has added to the map On Pitbulls.

Live interaction:

I tried out two methods of interaction with public during lecture performances

Collaborations with topic: On pitbulls

Ginger Naps (PhD candidate USA)

Jiska Jansen (PhD candidate VU)

Save our bullies (Protest group, UK)

Collaborations with Essaying

Note: Although this is a 9 month evaluation, because of the timing of the contract right before the summer break, the PD effectively started after the summer break in September 2023, so 7 months of fulltime research.
