Since 2011, I have created and evolved a choreographic method and sensorial technique named "The Spherical System," which consists of steps to re-imagine the body to generate dance material.
The practice generally encourages practitioners to visualize their bodies in a predeterminate diagram constructed of three-dimensional shapes - spheres, strings, and a cube - known as "The Spherical Body." From there, they can select specific spheres to organize their body and implement tasks, scores, and variations to create movement. The accumulation of motion can then be used to compose choreography.
As a choreographer, I have created and evolved this method within my choreographic practice; this tool is essential in my work, and I use it for every piece I create. The Spherical System is complex and is typically delivered to the practitioners by trying it physically through an extensive workshop or during a choreographic creation process. To articulate this project, I researched ways to compact the Spherical System's complexity into essential elements you can read, watch and interact with.
The following five elements are resulting representative enough to understand the method briefly.
1. The diagram "The Spherical Body."
2. The visualization experience.
3. The activation of the diagram.
4. The three tasks used for this creation.
5. The organization of the body diagram into a code of five spheres.
This exegesis will explain those five elements and the stages I took to produce the "Spherical Body" choreography. This choreography intends to expose aspects of my choreographic method to an audience, lacking any specific intention to convey a particular emotion or story.
It will also explain the Software Application "Body Sphere," designed to give basic information about the system. This Software Application is used as an element in the Spherical Body choreography setting, and it will be clarified how it's a supportive element for the piece.
This project also articulates the physical practice of The Spherical Body method through other mediums, such as videos and diagrams that communicate the system's principles and actions that you will find along the research.
