UNCLEAR DEFINITIONS by Franziska Zauner

This open exposition explores uncertainties and critical engagement through Backpulver´s Feedback Sessions in Vienna during winter/spring 2024. It is called BACKPULVER - think and practice tank for contemporary dance and works with the circular feedback training provided and co-facilitated by 6 different dance artists and the Backpulver Peer group. The aim is to Co-Generating Knowledge for other facilitators and to impact on the Viennese Dance Community. Another interest is in measurement of such Impact, which is tried to approach trough arts-based research. Visibility politics is also at the center of this research / work. It is treated through consent but also through artistic translation of the data. This exposition is not a classic documentary in the sense of an “inventory” or “record/evidence” of an event that is as objective, visual or written as possible. This research is understood as the art of documentation as a translation of what has been experienced into what can be used for further generation of knowledge.

Here some biographical insight and there some contextualization of this work:

Franziska lives and works in Vienna and is an interdisciplinary artist.

In 2024, she collaborated with Backpulver - Think and Practice Tank for Contemporary Dance and accompanied six performance and dance artist during their practice sharing in the WEEKLY SERIES.

With the collected material she designs UNCLEAR DEFINITIONS, a search for a new form of archiving and documenting in an artistic way.

In the tradition of Backpulvers Feedback Training lies, that dancers show and share their practice in a group of other dancers who then give feedback in various forms. Franziska gathered these insights on facilitators' practices and observed the peer-to-peer learning experiences.This Ping Pong of generating knowledge forms the basis of Backpulvers Feedback Sessions and the ground for this Research Catalogue.

Franziska's interest lies in COLLECTING, SELECTING, TRANSLATING and CREDITING the insights and outputs of the Practice Sharing. In this moment of highly creative engagement, the mind reaches a deep connection to the intuitive knowledge and shares this with the tools of artistic expression. This sensitive form of communication is the material of UNCLEAR DEFINITIONS. No words can describe what a thinking soul is feeling during an honest expression - this is an attempt to trace the frame of what makes it possible to express freely what the artistic body has to offer to the collective.

Each of the chapters has different challenges to face and is still in a development process in trying to find a new practice to trace knowledge exchange.
