Subsequent Questions

Knowledge as unfolding, not result

Subsequent Questions, held at Batalha Centro de Cinema, explored questioning as a way of thinking and making, rather than as a means to reach a final answer.  We approached questions as interventions in practice: as gestures that alter attention, redirect actions, and open or constrain possibilities. We asked how the way we formulate questions shapes what we do, and what questioning does to how we observe, experiment, and decide.

The encounter began with an open period of working with leftover materials. Only after some time did we introduce the proposal of formulating questions in relation to our movements and actions. As questions entered the process, we noticed shifts in rhythm, intention, and direction. Questioning did not function as a preliminary or explanatory step, but as a gesture that generated further practice, a way of remaining with uncertainty rather than resolving it.

As the session unfolded, attention turned to the questions themselves. We began to notice what each question carried: assumptions, desires, habits of thinking, implicit criteria. Some questions aligned with what we intended to ask; others quietly redirected the practice, revealing gaps between intention and effect. Questioning thus became a site of negotiation, where agency was shared between the practitioner and the question in formation.

Rather than aiming for clarity or outcome, we attended to what becomes possible when questions are allowed to act, circulate, and transform the process from within. What was foregrounded was not the production of answers, but the cultivation of a non-instrumental mode of inquiry, one that remains open, relational, and shaped through shared attention as the work unfolds.
