In my artistic research at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Helsinki, I explore the significance of listening in the practice of a queer visual artist. At the core of my research is the relationship between queer listening and the processes of art-making and scholarly reflection. I examine how can works of art resonate with the personal experiences of their creator and how they can create space for listening.
My main research methods include queer listening, drag (humour/camp), performances for the camera, drawing, an art exhibition as a research site and, in a way, writing through the artwork.
My research is guided by a desire to improve the still vulnerable position of queer individuals. Through my art and research, I aim to create space where listening, emotions, and queer experiences can be seen and felt. I hope that my work expands the understanding of the relationship between art and listening while encouraging more open and diverse interactions.
The Dinder app I created is based on my performances for the camera and experiences with dating apps after becoming single following a 19-year relationship.
