2.2 Formal analysis and reconstructions

2.2.1 About formal analysis and reconstructing phrases

In this chapter I will describe the formal aspects of the first movement of opus 110. The analysis is focused on providing material that can be used in the exercises from chapter 3 of this research. I do not intend to give a complete and definitive description of the form, but rather mention those moments in the piece that characterize its musical content in my opinion. By reconstructing certain passages I will provide the reader with more traditional alternatives. In doing so I strive to give the reader an insight in Beethoven’s specific and personal approach to traditional elements of structure in this piece: for example his approach to cadences and the modulatory plan of the movement.1
