Colonies in four parts explore colonial interests through the resonances, undercurrents and roots of the English park in Söderfors, Sweden.


Great Britain's native oak population was nearly wiped out by King Henry VIII. and the extensive shipbuilding of the colonial empire. Instead, the oaks reproduce abroad, where they spread through the imperial aesthetics of the English parks.

 

Sunesson has previously explored cultural connections to her former homeland Great Britain in several works, via the imperial globalisms of Thatcher and Reagan.

 

The use of the number four aims to disturb the "holy trinity" shaped by Christianity, often found in Western art by referring to the symbiotic, equalitarian state of entities found in the  symbolic languages of colonised populations.
