This exposition is part of the series The Sonic Atelier – Conversations with Contemporary Composers and Producers, dedicated to exploring the evolving role of the composer in the twenty-first century. Through a Q&A format, the project investigates how contemporary creators inhabit hybrid identities at the intersection of composition, production, performance, and technology. This interview features Federico Albanese, who reflects on his formation, his approach to integrating sound design and production into the act of writing, and his perspective on the transformations of today’s recording industry and streaming platforms. His insights shed light on central issues such as hybridity, authorship, and the value of craftsmanship in contemporary music-making.

This research project gathers a series of interviews with some of the closest collaborators of Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (1969–2018). Conducted between 2022 and 2025, the conversations preserve first-hand testimonies of his creative process, collaborative methods, and unique sonic universe.
Through the voices of Echo Collective (Neil Leiter & Margaret Hermant), Francesco Donadello, Viktor Orri Árnason, and Yair Elazar Glotman, the project explores themes such as orchestration, sound experimentation, electroacoustic practices, and the integration of music with film. The interviews have been edited and adapted from their original form in order to ensure clarity and contextual coherence, while remaining faithful to the collaborators’ perspectives.
Taken together, these accounts shed light on Jóhannsson’s aesthetics and working philosophy, offering a multifaceted portrait of a composer whose legacy continues to influence contemporary music.

This exposition is in progress and its share status is: visible to all.
My film work has revolved around a hypothesis of vulnerability with my artistic research question:
in the context of interviews and the larger scope of cinematic storytelling, how can tools to access vulnerability be a symbolic key to unlocking the transformative power of resilience in a narrative?
Proposed Methodology:
I. The Privilege of Listening
II. The Power of Silence
III. Trust & Intuition
IV. The Light of Vulnerability
V. Discovery of Resilience
