IRTIKYTKETYISSÄ TILOISSA – POISSAOLEVAN KOSKETUKSIA KATVEESSA muodostuu kolmesta taiteellisesta tutkimuksesta. Niissä tutkin kuljeskeluun perustuvien kokeellisten tutkimusmenetelmien avulla sitä, miten tilan kokemuksellisuuteen vaikuttaa sen taustalla olleen järjestyksen hajoaminen.
DISCONNECTED SPACE – CONTACTS WITH THE ABSENT IN THE BLIND SPOT is a doctoral thesis in Fine Arts, written in Finnish. The thesis is about the experiential phenomenon of space, which could be referred to as an off-connection in English. The thesis consists of three essays. The introduction in English is also included in the first page of the Thesis.

The structure and dynamics of worldly spaces are neighbourhoodly. In them, different kinds of life forms are connected, in a sharing relation, whether they like it or not. The other facet of the same coin is co-isolation and a state of shared closure. Any position from loving and intimate to aggressive or forced, from solidarity to imprisonment, is detached to and depicted through spatial relations. Infected by the “interpretation of foams” in the final volume of Peter Sloterdijk’s Spheres trilogy, I chose to take foam architecture onto a surgical table and take a closer look at its spatial, material, metaphorical and conceptual implications. I became driven in making inquieries on co-joined spatiality characterized by the “ontological nervousness of the co-existent, the other, the outer”.[1]
The Foaming Exercises installation was part of one of the research cells of the Research Pavilion #3 and became the first part of an (ongoing) examination of spatial co-existencies. Since then, the study has evolved into an ongoing further study on co-joined spatialities in relation to the emancipatory potential of spatial practices in urban context.
City as Space of Rules and Dreaming [2021–2025]

CITY AS SPACE OF RULES AND DREAMING promotes emancipation and democratisation in urban space by cross-examination through artistic research, empirical urban research, political theory and legal theory. The study strengthens polyphony of urban space and thereby develops a more just city
It asks: How is urban space formed and shared, and who has access to it? What normative and de facto instruments regulate, control and inhabit this space? What kinds of processes, structures and spaces of inclusion and marginalisation, as well as disagreement and controversy are there in the city? What kind of fractures, escape lines and dreams are hidden in the normativity of urban space? What kinds of spaces of shadow, noise, potentialities and dreams are there and how do they actualise?
The study reaches beyond established art-science boundaries by bringing new and more inclusive means of “soft law” to urban decision-making and inviting different neighborhoods to dream of their own dwelling-regions through imaginary urban archaeology and fictionalising democracy combining different artistic mediums.
The project is coordinated by the Academy of Fine Arts (Doctoral programme) at the University of the Arts Helsinki. Other partners are Helsinki University Faculty of Law, Helsinki University Faculty of Arts/ Aesthetics and Aalto University Department of Built Environment.
In Memoriam Ari Hirvonen (1960–2021)
The responsible leader (PI) of the project is Maiju Loukola at the Academy of Fine Arts / KuvA, Uniarts Helsinki. The other research group members and co-initiators are Aino Hirvola (Dept. of built environment, Aalto University), Tanja Tiekso (Faculty of Arts/Aesthetics, Helsinki University Faculty of Arts/ Aesthetics) and Paul Tiensuu (Helsinki University Faculty of Law). Since 2023 Jaakko Ruuska (KuvA, Uniarts Helsinki), Henna-Riikka Halonen (KuvA, Uniarts Helsinki) and Niran Baibulat (KuvA/Uniarts Helsinki) have contributed as postdoc artist-researchers for shorter periods.

Notations in the frame of Contingent Agencies

This exposition presents the working materials of a series of notations that were conducted in the frame of the Cross Disciplinary Symposum workshop 19–25 September 2022. The symposium was part of Alex Arteaga's and Nikolaaus Gansterer's research project Contingnet Agencies. A text based on these notes will be published in “Contingent Agencies. Inquiring Into the Emergence of Atmospheres” (Hatje Cantz, 2025), edited by Arteaga and Gansterer.
