A DIWO (Do-It-With-Others) artifact made through collaborative gestures and symbolic resistance.
This experimental design object was created with three men from the Mutante workshops, each contributing a piece of the whole: a head, a handle, and a means of binding. My partner, Anna, wove the knots. My dog, Fausto, chose the stick—a non-human collaborator reminding us of care beyond language.
The result is a paradox: a hammer that cannot strike. A tool that carries no utility, only memory. Tied instead of welded, it echoes the fragility and reconstruction of masculine identity.
This is not a hammer. This is a question in disguise.

DIWO Hammers: A Collective Game of Making and Reimagining Tools
(2025)

This project investigates the concept of Do-It-With-Others (DIWO) through the design of a collaborative game that invites participants to collectively create unconventional hammers. By decentralizing authorship and sourcing materials from others—divided into “handles,” “heads,” and “joiners”—the project shifts the role of the designer from maker to facilitator. Three unique hammers were assembled from donated parts, each explored through practical testing and speculative use-cases. This process challenges traditional ideas of tool-making, function, and authorship, and highlights how improvisation and collective input can generate poetic and thought-provoking design artifacts.

In this project, we-
Identify 5 or more people from our immediate surroundings and categorise them as ‘Suppliers’
Divide them into 3 groups and ask them to supply items to be used for Handles, Heads, and Joining Agents
Take items supplied by them and combine them into ideas for hammers
