Ellen Fallowfield

Ellen Fallowfield is an active performer and researcher in the field of contemporary music. She studied cello in Basel, Zürich and Graz. A grant from the Leverhulme Trust enabled her PhD studies at the University of Birmingham/Hochschule für Musik, Basel. At the HfM Basel, she created the resources www.cellomap.com and Cello MApp, and is currently researching cello etudes under a Swiss National Science Foundation fellowship.

I contextualise my work in cello multiphonics in the framework of practice-based research and key modern developments, such as music-as-performance and contemporary technique. I describe the processes and outputs involved in my research in terms of performance practice and research practice, and provide videos to demonstrate the practical use of a recently released app for cello harmonics and multiphonics.
