Visual artist, doctor in Arts and Sciences of Arts, researcher, associated with the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the Free University of Brussels (ULB).
Hélène Mutter holds in 2020 a PhD thesis entitled "La guerre à l’épreuve de l’image - Art et dispositifs visuels” (“War at the test of images - Art and visuals devices”), executed between the Academy of Fine Arts and the Free University of Brussels in the Repi Center (Research and Studies in International Politic).
Sensitive to political and social transformations around us using an approach focus on images, she questions the way of looking at the world and documenting it, and especially conflict and crisis situations, by the creation of images, archives and imagery, which are produced by military engineering, software program or mass media.
Her first solo exhibition took place in 2017 at the Peinture Fraiche gallery in Brussels, and her research was exhibited at the Foto Limo Festival and at La Nuit de l'Instant in 2018. She obtained a special mention from the jury at the Maghreb Photography Awards competition in 2019 for her work about the 1991 Gulf War. At the end of 2019, she went to Lebanon, which was in the midst of the revolution, to carry out a photographic project as part of her residency at the Beirut Art Residency.
Hélène Mutter is also a founder member of the CIREC, the Center for Research-Creation on social worlds, which considers together creation, scientific perspectives and societal concerns. Shortly, her research will be published in « Humanities, Arts and Society » HAS Magazine, a project by UNESCO-MOST and in 2021, she is the winner of a residency project in Luxembourg, leaded by the Wallonie-Brussels International Federation. She also develop a specific research program intended to raise awareness among our look face to war images.
