Polifonia project, Principal Investigator:
Paulė GudinaitėThe research part of this artistic project is composed of artistic research combining several traditions of analysis of vocal music: musicological (genre, word and music interaction aspects, cultural context issues) and performance studies. The purpose of the research is to reveal the special nature of musical interpretations of the literary sonnet (one of the most sophisticated and complex poetic forms often associated with images and symbols of the Renaissance culture) in terms of genre, history and culture. The focus is on the transformation of the particular genre-structural nature of the literary sonnet in musical works by Dmitry Shostakovich and Benjamin Britten and interpretations of performance of musical sonnets of these composers in terms of the effect of cultural inspirations and associations.
The creative part of the artistic project consists of the preparation and performance of sonnets as well as other works of chamber vocal music for the singer and piano by Russian, Lithuanian, German, English, Italian and French composers of the 19th–21st centuries. The author takes a deep look into stylistic features dictated by different periods and cultures, reveals and addresses difficulties encountered by pianists when performing these compositions.
