Petra Klusmeyer has been an art practitioner since the 1990s – initially in the visual arts, then shifting focus exploring sound as a medium and the sonic in philosophy, with interest in experimental podcasting. She has an MFA in Fine Arts (1999) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She received her PhD in 2019 from Leiden University/ACPA (Promotor: Prof. dr. Marcel Cobussen, Copromoter Dr. Sher Doruff; Promotiecommissie: Prof. dr. Henk Borgdorff, Prof. dr. Salomé Voegelin, Prof. dr. Simon O’Sullivan, Dr. Erin Manning). She holds a senior researcher position of Sound Studies|Research-Creation at the University of the Arts Bremen, where she teaches studio-based and theory-led courses and acts as a supervisor to master students in the Faculty of Art and Design. She has been a reviewer for the Leonardo Music Journal (LMJ) and the Journal of Artistic Research (JAR).
