This exposition is in progress and its share status is: visible to all.
This research project is an investigation conducted within the new Professional Doctorate (PD) programme in the Netherlands, which aims to implement a third-cycle education in practice-based research in the arts and design. This is a research trajectory into the field, the existing research groups in Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS), the candidates’ projects, and surrounding networks, that guarantees the PD’s quality and success as a sustainable programme. The opportunity to map the field of artistic and design research is not only important for this PD cycle in particular, but for the field at large: to understand the diversity while making sense of main themes and threads, to connect nodes previously isolated by the “project-by-project” conditions that artists often find themselves in, to bring legitimacy to artistic and design research within the context of UAS and national education and research agendas. As a researcher at the PD, I am establishing a series of maps and “companion texts” that contextualise and interrogate artistic and design research, drafting an ever-shifting landscape of multiple methods and outcomes.
