Johannes Maria Schmit (1981) is a director and researcher working in a broad variety of artistic as well as pedagogical formats. He is currently a PhD-candidate at Stockholm University of the Arts, where he will defend his artistic doctorate in 2025.

Supervised by Thomas Ostermeier, Robert Schuster and René Pollesch, Schmit worked foremost in postdramatic formats after his graduation from the Ernst Busch Conservatoire. Following a two years period as in-house-director at Centraltheater Leipzig, he founded the performance duo “White on White”, together with Swedish actor Iggy Malmborg (2010-2016).

In 2021, Schmit’s feature film “Neubau” was awarded the “Prize of the German Film Critic Association” as best debut.
