  • Solo Improvisations: the polyphonic nature of the guitar
Polifonia project, Principal Investigator: Alieksey Vianna
Throughout history, the classical guitar has been widely explored as a vehicle for solo music playing. However, it is not nearly as commonly heard as an unaccompanied instrument within improvised music contexts. The reason for this probably has to do with the fact that improvising guitarists almost invariably approach the instrument homophonically, making it difficult to generate enough interesting material for whole solo performances. Through this research project, I want to learn how to use the solo guitar polyphonically in improvised music settings. The research will be done through the analysis of writings and scores plus the transcription of recordings of master guitarists/composers/improvisers, as well as the compilation of my own technical and musical vocabularies and the composition of original exercises and pieces. These ideas are to be presented in a series concerts and written in the form of a comprehensive method of study ofpolyphonic improvisation for solo guitar.
