About this exposition

PER-FORM, the performative essay and essayistic performance Everyone knows what an essay is, or at least everyone thinks they know what an essay is. And the ones who do know what an essay is, are having a hard time defining it. Uniformly defining the essay has historically been notoriously difficult, the essay is still labeled as undefinable non-genre. This is mainly due to the essays diverse, flexible, self-reflective, and experimental form. It drifts between the artistic and the scientific, the experiential and the intellectual. The essay follows its own process of investigation, it is in essence an attempt. Over the course of its existence, the essay has migrated from text to other artistic mediums. In this research I investigate how the essayistic approach can be used in performance art. I thoroughly investigated the grounds from which the essay arises in order to depict the characteristic element of the essay. Then I argument that the essay is in essence performative, and investigate how the essayistic characteristics could be expressed in performance art. In the course of this research I also investigate the underlying question: if essayistic science can be an un-methodological method for Artistic Research.
