RESEARCH QUESTION

"Can the enchanting melodies of Norwegian folklore harmonize with the ancestral music of Sardinia, find resonance in the improvisational flair of Nordic jazz and stimulate stylistically-novel music narratives?"

The purpose of my artistic research is to delve into the synergistic potential of two distinct musical domains: Norwegian and Sardinian folklore.

The principal aim is to refashion tradition by pioneering seminal artistic results to exhibit a contemporary, idiomatic concept. Within these diverse music areas, a modern approach on advanced rhythmical models and avant-garde compositional methodologies intersects with the pristine metric and lyrical qualities of Sardinian and Norwegian folklore, dwelling on Nordic jazz abstractions to inform, stimulate and influence new musical findings.

From a personal, contemporary drummer perspective, this exploration is not just a fusion of disparate elements but a transformation of ingrained features, which aim to respectfully integrate tradition into an uncharted artistic territory. At its heart, this research is driven by a deep rhythmic inquiry, aspiring to redefine how traditional music`s cadences can evolve and morph within a contemporary framework, enabling new performative paradigms.

RISK FACTORS AND ETHICAL CHALLENGES

My artistic exploration presented both academic allure and ethical dilemmas. Bridging these diverse musical traditions carried the risk of unintentional cultural appropriation or misrepresentation. There was a delicate balance to maintain, as, in venturing beyond familiar territory, I was acutely aware of the potential resistance from purists of these traditions.

To navigate these complexities, it was imperative to ensure participant awareness of these potential challenges. This involved allowing rights of withdrawal and fostering diverse representation to minimize ethical risks. Clear channels for feedback and redress were essential.

This approach was not only about safeguarding the integrity of the project but also about ensuring the emotional well-being of all involved. By maintaining open lines of communication and remaining receptive to concerns, the project sought to resolve issues effectively, ensuring that the music served as a bridge—not only between cultures, but also between past and present.

So far, and to this day, the project has progressed smoothly and has not encountered any form of resistance or opposition. The only cautions raised concerned the importance of not presenting certain findings—particularly those related to Norwegian folk rhythms—as definitive or universal truths. These observations were instead understood as contextual interpretations, shaped by specific perspectives and experiences.
