SEA SMOKE, by Bruno Tagliasacchi Masia

The atmospheric phenomenon known as “sea smoke" occurs when a layer of cold air quickly crosses over a warm ocean surface, creating a beautiful smoky effect.

Inspired by the unpredictability of this phenomenon, I composed a circular, double- sided score that embodies an unpredictable nature.

Outside the circle, the performer can choose one of six different rhythmic cells, including "free choice" - here the performer leave the instrument and use his or her own body freely - to trigger the start of their performance.

The starting point is silence; there is no common beginning. Each performer begins at any time with any of the five figures. The performance takes shape as each musician moves forward, playing and holding the chosen figure.

Moving to the next rhythmic figure (clockwise on the first page and counterclockwise on the second page), the performer scaffolds their performance, which is influenced by interactions with the choices of the other musicians.

After completing one round of each circle, the performer stops playing, creating the unpredictability of how the music will come to an end. There is no conduction or directed parts; the common trait is joint improvisation shaped by subjective interpretation and use of the score.
