Professor John Thwaites is Head of the Department of Keyboard Studies at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Director of Cadenza International Summer Music School, and a founder member of the Primrose Piano Quartet. Of his twelve commercially available recordings, two were chosen as BBC Music Magazine's Chamber Music Choice of the Month (with double five star ratings). Important commissions include new Piano Quartets by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Anthony Payne.

As a collaborative pianist he has spent his life playing the chamber music of Johannes Brahms. In 1996, on the eve of the Centenary, he hosted an 8 concert cycle of the Complete Chamber Music at Christ's Hospital, taking the seventeen piano parts.  A recording of the 'Cello Sonatas with Alexander Baillie uses different historic pianos from the same Gert Hecher collection chosen for the Primrose Piano Quartet's recording of the Piano Quartets. Op. 120 with Dorothea Vogel follows.
