Polifonia project, Principal Investigator:
Andrius MaslekovasIn this research, the author tries to take an in-depth look into sonorous music: its structure, principles of composition and models of communication which help this music retain links with the Western musical tradition and expand its boundaries at the same time.
In this project, music is called “sonorous” when the parameters of change in its timbre, colours and/or facture are more important than the parameters of change in melody (linear), rhythm and harmony (vertical) dominant in traditional music, when the composer obviously focuses on the change in sound rather than the formal musical processes. Therefore, the field of research covers many composers of the second half of the 20th century and early 21st century who may not be directly associated with the concepts of sonority and sonorism used in Polish musicology. The author presumes that this music is based on certain common communication models and archetypical structural principles which are conducive to the co-existence of this music, which may seem inconsistent with the whole Western musical tradition, alongside the classical works of Western music.
For the research author, who is a composer, the aesthetics of sonorous music plays a crucial role in the realisation of artistic ideas. Therefore, the creative part of this artistic project is closely related to the research topic as it demonstrates the realisation of author’s theoretical assumption in the composing practice. The author intends to end his doctoral studies with a large composition for a symphonic orchestra which would be based on the sonorous music composing principles analysed in the theoretical part of the project.
