Dr. Joonas Lahtinen is Professor of Performance Art and Artistic Research at the MUK Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna. He studied Performance at Queen Mary, University of London and Theatre research at the University of Helsinki, where he completed his performance analytical and epistemological doctoral dissertation, entitled “Making Sense of Perception and Power in Participatory Performance. Horizons of Change and Politics of the Sensible in Lois Weaver’s What Tammy Needs to Know, Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen’s Complaints Choir, and Claudia Bosse’s dominant powers. was also tun?”, in January 2021.
In his projects, Lahtinen explores and combines performance and live art, installation, video, sound and photography. Lahtinen’s projects are research-driven, investigating the politics and poetics of space, place and the everyday, societal functions of art, participatory strategies, collaborative forms of artistic practice, and questions about self-determination and individualism. Lahtinen’s projects have been presented internationally in numerous institutions and festivals.
Artistic Research and the development of novel artist pedagogies in Higher Education are among Lahtinen’s main interests. He is a member of the SAR Special Interest Group “Artist Pedagogy Research Group” and the convenor of the subgroup “Spaces of Artist Education”. Lahtinen was also a key advisor and collaborator in the artistic research project “Tactics for a Collective Body” (2020–2022) at AP Schools of Arts Antwerp. Lahtinen worked as a full-time Lecturer-Researcher in Art and Education at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 2017 until 2023, and has had teaching, mentoring, and planning engagements at the University of Helsinki, UniArts Helsinki, and AP Schools of Art Antwerp. Lahtinen has contributed to various publications on themes such as performance analysis, theatre theory, and art pedagogy.
