Tom Rice is a Senior Lecturer in Anthropology at the University of Exeter. His book on listening practices in the hospital setting, Hearing and the Hospital: sound, listening, knowledge and experience, was published in 2013. He has written articles and chapters on sound research for numerous journals and edited volumes, including Sound Studies, The Senses and Society, the Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Keywords in Sound and The Oxford Handbook of Sound Studies. Besides writing and teaching on sound, he produces audio documentaries, most recently a piece for the BBC World Service entitled Govindpuri Sound, a collaboration with urban researcher Tripta Chandola in which they explored the soundscape of a slum settlement in Delhi, India.
