Flick Harrison is a writer, media artist, filmmaker, community-engager and educator in Vancouver. Starting out on the CBC youth series Road Movies as one of Canada’s first professional videographers, he’s since made video in Pakistan, the US, Mexico and China. His work includes research, creation, visual design, youth leadership, activism and media literacy.
 
“I’ve explored boundaries of all kinds in media, politics, education and the arts for over twenty years.  As an artist, I explode the aesthetics of political conflict; as an educator, I try to make media flow organically from the social.  My ambition is to lead, support and challenge non-profits, schools, community groups and other progressive actors to improve their understanding and use of media, all while having fun.”
 
His work has been seen on dance and theatre stages, by millions on television, been nominated and won awards internationally, and slipped into, under and through almost every Canadian funding niche. The Globe and Mail called him “hilarious,” and the Georgia Straight called his work “gorgeously sophisticated.”

    The question: whom do you walk with? Was put to me as a way to reflect on the history of my practice as a community engaged artist over the last part of the twentieth century living on the west coast of Canada. This interactive research space is an attempt to respond to an alternative notion of history and the influences on this art form over the course of thirty years. It also seeks to acknowledge the communities of people this art practice allied itself with. These people and their communities often lived outside and beyond the margins of the national narrative of history and its parade. It is my hope this site offers a pedagogical space that invites students, researchers, educators, artists, and others to consider the questions that populate and characterize socially engaged arts practice and arts based research. The author’s reflections and writings captured at the roots of this reflection range from videos, poetic inquiry, reports, and scholarly essays on the nature of my experience of working in this field.
