Pedro Silva Marra and Thaise Valentim Madeira

Thaíse Valentim Madeira has a PhD in Communication and Information Sciences from Paris III Sorbonne Nouvelle University (France), in cooperation with the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil). She holds a MA in Social and Cultural History from the Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, and a BA in Journalism from Unileste MG. She takes part in the "New Media Convergence Center" (CCNM/UFMG) and "Urban Sounds Atelier" (UFES) research groups. She works with audiovisual production, particularly with themes related to cultural mediation, media devices, mega events, memory and heritage, cultural diversity, and popular traditions.

Sonic Politics: Sonority, Territoriality, and Violence in Urban Cultural Practices in Brazil (2020) author(s): Pedro Silva Marra and Thaise Valentim Madeira published in: Journal of Sonic Studies
In this paper we build upon Gumbrecht’s definition of violence as all acts and all forms of behavior that occupy or block spaces through bodies, against the resistance of other bodies, in order to explore the relationship between sound and violence. Examined within a broader context, it may reveal how conflict and disputes are – as much as acts of exchanging and bonding – engines of society.
