Axel Volmar

Axel Volmar is a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Art History & Communication Studies at McGill University. He is also a member of the international research network Auditory Knowledge in Transition: An Epistemic History of Listening in Modernity funded by the German Research Foundation. His work focuses on the history of scientific listening and explores the relationship between sensual practices, data analysis and knowledge production within the auditory culture of science. Volmar is the co-editor of collected volumes on technology and temporality, auditory media cultures (with Jens Schröter, 2013) and the cultural history of data sonification (with Andi Schoon, 2012). Recent publications: “Listening to the Cold War: The Nuclear Test Ban Negotiations, Seismology, and Psychoacoustics 1958–1963,” in Osiris 28 (2013); “Sonic Facts for Sound Arguments: Medicine, Experimental Physiology, and the Auditory Construction of Knowledge in the 19th Century,” in Journal of Sonic Studies 4 (2013).
