  • Piano Compositions by M. K. Čiurlionis: Special Aspects of Textology and Editing
Polifonia project, Principal Investigator: Virginija Levickienė
The objective of this artistic research is to formulate the music editing methodology based on the existing studies of the principles of textology and editing as well as the results of practical research and use this methodology to edit the works for piano by M. K. Čiurlionis. The project discusses the relationship between the author’s and edited text and gives examples of research of the works by Western European composers and scientific publications of J. Grier, J. J. McGann, G. Feder, P. H. Lang, H. Leichtentrit, G. Tomlinson, J. Shepherd, L. Kramer, H. D. Johnston, W. Emer, S. T. Wotton, F. Brown. The problems of musical text editing and its presentation in publications are laid out through the examination of manuscripts of piano compositions by M. K. Čiurlionis and their published versions which are compared against each other in terms of textology and editing (edited by S. Šimkus, J. Čiurlionytė, V. Landsbergis, D. Eberlein, B. Vainiūnaitė, D. Kučinskas, J. Neniškytė, R. Zubovas). In her research paper, the author analyses aspects of presentation of the text of works of music in publications, causes of certain changes arising during editing (such as deviations from the autograph), systematic models of sources, application of textology theories formulated by philologists in research of musical texts, already established editing principles and certain models of text presentation, types of publications. The object of art research is closely related to the creative side of Virginija Levickienė’s artistic project which for the most part consists of performance of piano compositions by M. K. Čiurlionis.
