• Principles of Drone Music Composing

  The artistic research Principles of Drone Music Composing focuses on a new experimental musical style which emerged in the second half of the 20th century. There has been little systematic research of drone music in musicological literature (Demers, 2010) although the composers of drone music (La Monte Young, Phill Niblock, Charlemagne Palestine, etc.) have gained recognition and are deemed to be significant innovators, while their music has had a major impact on the development of contemporary electronic music. The objective of this research is to reveal the musical philosophy, context, technical and cognitive aspects of the drone style. The thesis also analyses the dynamics of information in drone music and outlines a plan of designing software for the analysis of this style of music. The research methods are systematic and comparative analysis as well as experimentation (creating works according to the models discovered). In recent years, the author gave the following presentations on this topic: “Prerequisites for Analysis of Works of Drone Music” (at the LMTA conference Modernism Discourse in Contemporary Lithuanian Art), “Time Aspects in Drone Music” (at the conference Principles of Music Composing: the Phenomenon of Rhythm in 2013), “Drone (r)evolution” (at the European innovation exhibition ICT 2013: Create, Connect, Grow).
