Polifonia project, Principal Investigator:
Yannis (Ioannis) OikonomoyIn my PhD research I intend to introduce the ney as a new solo instrument into Greek traditional music and explore both its interpretive possibilities and virtuosic capabilities. A comparative analysis of early recordings by leading interpreters of the vast traditional repertoire (partly based of my own transcriptions) will be combined with a study of written texts, and as such provide me the material to perform the different genres and styles. With my doctoral research I hope to acquire a deeper insight into both my own creative process and the playing techniques and styles I develop for the ney. By analyzing all the different genres, I will get an insider's knowledge of the fundamental concepts and artistic processes that define Greek traditional music. From a methodological point of view, this project is based on a cyclical process where practice (i.e. performance) and an investigation of the musical and cultural features of each genre are interrelated. The outcome of the process complies with the nature of the research and is in the form of a written thesis and ‘documented' performances. Until now there has been no systematic research on how to perform this kind of music on the ney. In general, research on Greek music is very limited (in any field, both practical and theoretical). In short, my innovative artistic research serves the practice, contributes to a deeper understanding of the repertoire, and adds a new instrument to it.
