Ariana Amir Hosseini's graduation project questions the normatisation of the artificial environment dictated by the Vitruvian anthropometric scale alone, introduced by early modernist architecture manuals such as the "neufert - architect's data" (1939). This, in her view, is limited to promoting the efficiency of everyday activities while neglecting many other values that architecture and design can offer such as the connection between people.
By focusing on the ritual of food, Ariana disrupts such everyday and important actions as, preparing food, cooking it and eating it, by proposing surreal spaces and objects that encourage connections between people based on a normatisation of interdependent actions.
Unburying, from Liminals, Emerging: Three Contexts for a Microtonal Prepared Piano

Can an acoustic grand piano be sonically and conceptually reimagined so as to re-negotiate its foundational assumptions around tuning and timbre? Why should the piano continue to be so accustomed to only one tuning system? In contrast, how can “pure sounds” (ratios found in the harmonic series) co-exist with ethnically diverse microtonal tunings?
Spanning a period from 2020-2022, “Unburying, from Liminals, Emerging” explores a microtonal prepared piano in three artistic contexts. These include: a solo project called “Postcards of Nostalgia; a chamber ensemble consisting of saxophone trio, percussion and piano; and a “percussion ensemble with soprano saxophone called Juniper Fuse.
Dialoging with a newly invented tuning system, what emergent properties might we find when magnetic piano preparations are used to evoke specific timbral effects from Balinese Gamelan and Indian Karnatik music? Collectively, how can this expanded notion of “piano” merge with spatialization to facilitate interactive experiences for audiences? How might a process-oriented Jungian-inspired dream work communicate itself so as to distill and coalesce a fertile musical landscape?
ANALYZING WITH THE ARTS

This exposition explores the following question: How might an analysis be done in post-qualitative inquiry and performative approaches?
Considering that post-qualitative inquiry rejects pre-existing research designs, methods, processes, procedures, or practices, and acknowledging that a research process will unfold and materialize differently in different projects, my aim is to explore one possible approach to analysis. This approach explored herein is specific to my PhD project. At the same time, I invite you to re-turn (to) the pieces you find fruitful and adjust them to your research.
The research material being analyzed in this exposition is informed by my PhD project, which explores what might materialize in the matter of digital musicking when a loop station and 1–3-year-olds meet each other in a kindergarten context.
Exploring how an analysis might be done in post-qualitative inquiry and performative approaches, and as the title plays on, the method of analyze is with the arts and take an arts-based approach.
This exposition contributes to the fields of early childhood music education, post-qualitative and performative inquiry, and arts-based research.
This exposition is included in the anthology "Utfordringer og muligheter innen musikk og utdanning", or "Challenges and Opportunities in Music and Education" in Enlgish. The anthology is published as part of MusPed:Research by the Cappelen Damm Academic publishing house. MusPed:Research is a peer-reviewed series of scholarly publications within the field of music pedagogy. The anthology, of which this exposition is a part, has been peer-reviewed, and this extends to this exposition as well.
Performance as Device for Disorientation

By its very nature, performance is precarious—there is always the chance that everything might fall apart. In an attempt to mitigate the discomfort of this unpredictability, many musicians develop strategies in the hope of holding the reins on the proverbial cart. But what if one chose not to maintain control and instead embraced the wild nature inherent to performance? What kinds of knowledge and aesthetic experiences might emerge in the inevitable moments of collapse? Drawing on her recent research in the project Performing Precarity, an extended collaboration with composer Simon Løffler, as well as concepts by Jack Halberstam and Sara Ahmed, percussionist/performer Jennifer Torrence meditates on the notion of performance as a device for disorientation—that is, performance as an embodied practice of rupture, of getting lost, and of undoing the order of things.
TRAVERSING SONIC TERRITORIES (TST)

What happens when musicians improvising on acoustic instruments sample and exchange their sound libraries? How can such a transgression of sonic territories contribute to an expanded understanding of one’s own sonic identity? And could this b/lending of identities point to a more ambiguous yet vibrant field of intra-play? Departing from these questions, this project intends to challenge our idea of sonic identity as a personal subject-oriented entity, and consequently investigate how a collaborative sharing of sampled sounds, can contribute to an expanded understanding of the sounds we play and are played by. Individual idiomatic approaches to one’s own instrument are thus interfered as we transgress habitual boundaries for action possibilities and musical imagination. The practice circulates from the duo of Torben Snekkestad and Søren Kjærgaard toward external collaborators, where the sharing process involves different approaches to audio sampling and mapping, embedding and embodying, listening and playing with each other’s sonic material to a point where authorship, origin, instrument and sonic identity is diffracted.

MEMORY AS A METHOD FOR FILMMAKING

This research develops a method for filmmaking that uses autobiographical memory as a guiding principle for the production of images. The proposed method comes as the result of a double gesture in which I wanted to a) acquire a subjective understanding of memory that came from artistic practice; and b) materialize the process of memory through film.
I used the filmmaking apparatus as a technique to give visibility to the process of remembering and forgetting: I worked with strategies such as the elaboration of a “memory diary”; the drawing of spoken portraits and locations based on memories; casting techniques which involved a dialectical approach towards memory; scouting trips to find places from my memory; hypnosis sessions as a technique to recover lost memories; reenactments of memories; a method to direct actors that relied on memory as a guiding mechanism; and the editing of the footage through a process of memory associations.
While doing this research, I inadvertently found that the techniques I used led to a process in which memories were rewritten through experimentation. Thus, the method produced a conceptualization of "memory" that frames it as a creative process. In the process of working on this project, I developed a very subjective approach to the craft of filmmaking that was informed by my particular relationship with memory. Thus, the proposed method of using personal memory as a core mechanism for the production of audio-visual products can be utilized as a tool for film education, promoting the creation of personal film languages based on an individual's memory, and as device to reflect on the subjective process behind an individual's artistic practice.
Exorcising Unhomely Street: Filmic Intuition and the Representation of Post-concussive Syndrome

My interdisciplinary, practice-led research involves a diverse methodological approach, including experimental film production, continental philosophy, psychoanalysis, and neuroscience. In this exposition, I review the role of intuition in creative practice, and the influential factors when the work of art ‘happens’.
The short, experimental film Unhomely Street represents the experience of post-concussive syndrome through a surrealist narrative with historical accounts of atrocity and anti-capitalist polemics. Having employed a new approach to filmmaking — a spontaneous method in which artistic decisions are informed by emotional tone rather than narrative concerns — I reflect upon this creative play. I draw on the work of neuroscientist Antonio Damasio, specifically his view that emotion underpins consciousness, Freud’s theory of the unconscious, and Irving Massey’s understanding of metaphor as the original, pre-linguistic language of thought.

Choreo-graphic Figures: Beginnings + Emergences
Choreo-graphic Figures: Deviations from the Line is an interdisciplinary research collaboration involving artist Nikolaus Gansterer, choreographer Mariella Greil, and writer-artist Emma Cocker, for investigating the nature of ‘thinking-in-action’ or ‘figures of thought’ produced as the practices of drawing, choreography and writing enter into dialogue, overlap and collide.
Central is an attempt to find ways of better understanding and making tangible the process of research ‘in-and-through practice’ — the unfolding decision-making, the thinking-in-action, the dynamic movements of ‘sense-making’, the durational ‘taking place’ of something happening live — and for asserting the epistemological significance of this habitually unseen or unshared aspect of the artist’s, choreographer’s or writer’s endeavour.
Our research enquiry unfolds through two interconnected aims: we are interested in the nature of ‘thinking-feeling-knowing’ operative within artistic practice, and seek to develop systems of notation (and exposition) for sharing and reflecting on this often hidden or undisclosed aspect of the creative process. Through this specific exposition — Beginnings and Emergences — our intent is to share findings from the prologue phase and year one of our three-year research project Choreo-graphic Figures: Deviations from the Line, during which we have explored how various processes of ‘beginning’ performed within live artistic activity might create the conditions for processes of emergence to arise. The intent is to share some of the ‘figures’ developed within this research project for articulating ‘beginning’ within a collaborative artistic process (e.g. Figure of Circulation, Figure of Shared Vibrations, Figure of Clearing, Ordering and Emptying Out, Figure of Touch and Reaching Towards the Other), alongside reflecting on and attending to the process of emergence within artistic labour itself – a process we have called ‘figuring’. Figuring – we use this term to describe those imperceptible or barely perceptible movements and transitions at the cusp of awareness within the process of “sense-making”: the moments of revelation, epiphany, synchronicity, of change in tack or direction or pace, the decision to stop, do something different, begin again. Figuring manifests within those threshold moments within the creative process that are often hard to discern but which ultimately shape and steer the direction of the evolving activity. Our research involves cultivating practices of attention (a perceptual heightening, hyper-sensitizing, sharpening of alertness) for noticing these emergent figurings within the process of creative activity, and devising systems of notation for identifying, marking and even tentatively naming these processes of emergence.
In developing this exposition, our intent has been to remain faithful to the process of investigation itself. Rather than being conclusive, our exposition reflects the process of its own production; itself a diagramming of the multiple and at times competing forces and energies operative within the process of artistic collaborative practice. We propose an exposition that unfolds less as the linear explication of a process, but rather — like artistic process itself — more as an assemblage of overlapping and concurrent components, where attention shifts between the textual and the visual, between what is sayable and what is shown.

S/N 267 is the result of a collective search begun within the Internet Archive, an ever-evolving digital space that provides access to various types of resources, enabling the preservation and dissemination of knowledge. This Internet library archives not only digital content and snapshots of Web pages, but also images, audio, video, and software. The project investigates the diversity of representations that emerge from online searches, exploring how the individual conceives of the body through the selection and uploading of content into the digital world. Using the word “body” as the main filter for image selection, S/N 267 takes the form of a sticker album where each image tells a unique, sometimes highly personal story and reflects the richness and variety of content uploaded by users.

PRIOR is a functional experimental installation that explores the relationship between the sensory apparatus and spatial orientation. The subject of investigation is the link between the prediction model and the sensory input of the visual apparatus. By the method of disruption of the visual apparatus, the sequence of the mechanism responsible for spatial orientation is disentangled.
