Ghost Installation: Sparvkvarteren

Ghost Installation: Sparvkvarteren. Rpi stereo output.

Ghost Installation: Sparvkvarteren was part of the same evening that Deuterium: Virkesvägen was created for. It was made with a single, combined recording of sparrows from Solna, Tensta and Hammarby, two clips of synthesizer material, and two recordings of the construction machinery closing in on Virkesvägen 3, recorded the same week we made our event in the Coyote Collective’s exhibition, Pioneer Town. The area was called Sparvkvartern (or “Sparrow block”) according to the artists there.

This was installed in sight, on one of the walls of the space, as several artists had done with their audio-visual contributions. I was still testing the viability of PureData on Rpi machines (palm-sized, circuit board computers that are fully functional, if not very powerful, and cost 35 USD each) for carrying out Ghost Installations. I used an extremely limited number of sound files because this was all the Rpi could handle. I then duplicated the stereo signal with cable doublers, and ran it up two walls on either size of a corner, in order to diffuse the sound through the room.  I used JBL Go speakers for this particular occasion.  Pioneer Town was built around a concept of bringing the outside construction site feeling inside the building. Thus I brought the sparrows in, too.

There was no video documentation of this Ghost Installation, due to equipment failure. Here is a photo of the installation, together with a recording of the output from the Rpi machine it ran from.
