This seminar is about ethics in artistic research and artistic practice. It provides an introduction to basic research ethics and ethics in the arts, as well as methods for mapping ethical dimensions of artistic research. Various ethical challenges and potentials are discussed based on the research fellows’ projects. We recommend you to prepare and reflect on the seminar in dialogue with your supervisor(s).

Venue

The seminar is digitally and takes place in Zoom. Link will be shared with all participants a few days before the seminar.

Preparations

Before the seminar, all participants need to:

  1. Read the literature on the mandatory reference list and watch the pre-recorded video (published below).
  2. Submit a short text in English by 3 May at 12:00 (max. 300 words, submitted directly as text in an e-mail to pku@hkdir.no): What do you consider as an ethical challenge in your project? Please describe how the Guidelines for Research Ethics in the Social Sciences and the Humanities are relevant (or not relevant) for your challenge.
  3. Prepare a short/10 minutes presentation of your ethical challenge. Remember that the seminar partipants also need a brief introduction to your project.
  4. Use the MapEthics!-method (see video and article below), and identify ethical dimensions in your project. Please bring the map with you to the seminar.
  5. Familiarise yourself with the other fellows' pre-shared material before the seminar (you will receive a link that give you access to the material one week before the seminar).

Map ethics! (mandatory)

Jostein introduces «Map ethics!», a method for identifying and addressing ethical dimensions of artistic research projects. The method uses perspectives from Actor-Network Theory, encouraging the reader to map the networks of relations between human and non-human actors in her research project and consider the ethical dimensions of these relations. The process will hopefully open spaces for discussion and reflection.

The video /right) were recorded for seminar 3 about research ethics, in May 2021. You should watch the video before the seminar. Jostein Gundersen will attend the seminar, and we will give priority to discussions and reflections, instead of using too much time for lectures. Please write down questions that might come to you when watching the video, and bring these with you to the seminar.

In the talk Jostein Gundersen will be refering to (not mandatory reading):

Research Ethics: Principles, Respect, Integrity (mandatory)

In this talk, Hallvard Fossheim will give a brief sketch of the basic principles for research ethics: respect for persons, good consequences, justice, and researcher integrity. These principles are general and of course in need of careful and good judgment in each case, but they are also very helpful, in that they remind us of what is at stake ethically in a wide range of research related situations. A primary focus will be on respect for persons (among the so-called external principles) and integrity (among the internal principles).

Right: The paper (PDF) Hallvard Fossheim will be refering to in his presentation.

Program

The first of day of the seminar will be organised as a plenary session with mainly lectures and discussions.

Day two and partly day three will be organised as parallell group sessions (5-7 participants in each group):
  • Please be prepared to present the ethical challenge related to your project in the group (an overview of the groups will be published a few days before the seminar - you will be in the same group all days).
  • You will be given max. 10 minutes for the presentation, followed by 35 minutes for discussions and feedback. Your presentations should make it possible for the group to understand your project and the ethical challenge (see "preparations"). Please end the presentation with a question you would like the group to discuss.
  • All seminar participants are expected to play an active part in the discussion of the other research fellows’ projects.
  • The groups decide themself the order of fellows´presentations.
  • All groups will have a moderator that help you keep the time, facilitate the discussion and support you with constructive critical questions.
