Visual Research

Maarten Dillen

Welcome to my visual research.

I created this catalogue to offer an overview of the steps I follow when creating artwork. It serves as a way to document and track my process as a visual artist. Since I often work on multiple pieces at once, it’s easy to lose track of my ideas. This catalogue helps me stay organized and critically evaluate my own work. Many of the decisions I make during the creative process are intuitive, and I find value in allowing that spontaneity. However, I’ve realized that sometimes I miss important aspects of my visual research. I also believe that sharing my process visually holds significant value.

For clarity, I’ve divided my visual research into three main facets: Paintings, Sculptural, and Archive. The Paintings section focuses on the process behind creating my paintings. The Sculptural section is dedicated to works that have an installation-like quality. Finally, the Archive page provides an overview of photographs and drawings that inspire me. These drawings are part of my creative process, serving as a source of inspiration for my work.

You may notice that this research catalogue changes frequently. It’s not intended to be a portfolio— I have a separate website for that. The goal of this catalogue is to create a dynamic visual research tool, a page that can shift and evolve over time to reflect the ongoing development of my artistic practice.

(Please note that this research catalogue is a work in progress, and not everything may appear complete.)
