3. Modeling
Description: The teacher demonstrates a musical phrase, technique, or concept for the student to observe and then imitate. The focus is on replicating not only the notes but also the dynamics, articulation, phrasing, and expression.
Variations:
- Modeling with exaggerated dynamics or articulation for emphasis.
- Playing the phrase in varying styles for students to emulate.
- Playing simultaneously: one player takes the role of the leader, setting intentions, while the other follows.
Purpose: To develop aural learning, refine technique, and instill musical nuances such as phrasing and dynamics. Modeling also helps students internalize style and expression by closely mirroring professional or advanced examples.
