Tending towards each other: between breath and inscription

This research is grounded in the relation between listening and orientation through a kindred gesture: tending towards. Its object of inquiry is the dialogue between Paul Celan’s poems and Gisèle Lestrange-Celan’s etchings in the publication Atemkristall (Brunidor 1965, Vaduz). The choice of this pairing arises from the possibility of bringing together two elements: the breath and the ground. I follow the flux and exchange between breathing gestures and inscription across the poems and etchings, approaching the images not as illustrations or representations of the text but as spatial configurations of encounter—between readers, listeners, makers, and witnesses.
Attendance as a gesture of attention becomes palpable when the poet imagines that “the poem is pneumatically touchable” and that “the reader breathes into the poem.” In this turning-towards-the-poem, the etchings invite a reading of the poet’s gesture as it inclines toward another practice and medium. My interest lies in how, within this publication, both media affect and reorient one another, generating a shared space of reading. Extending this form of listening means approaching the relation between word and image as the opening of spaces of attention—listening as inclination, as stance, before any immediate attempt of translation.

The vAImpir project (виипир) takes as its starting point AI as an axis of self-reflection: on the one hand, as a tool for content expansion and artistic exploration, and on the other, as a tool that parasites with representations of the historical biases that accumulate in the databases within the framework of the digital humanities, and that in some way describe the current moment, in which the understanding of the world unfolds on a digital interface where authorship is diluted. A reflection-action from diffusion models on the narrow margins that separate the space of reality and the space of fiction. This project is contextually fed by the work Vampir-Cuadecuc (Pere Portabella, 1970).

Crux of the Matter is an Artistic research endeavour in the making. It is (being) metadesigned through synergies and relationships created between three forums and publication platforms: PS Exploratory, Ymt, and Message. The Crux fora creates a cyclical and sustainable flow
of ideas, material, and foci for a synergetic iterative approach to find out how the artistic and empirical in Visual communication can coalesce to inspire professional, artistic,
and social agency through Editorial design. Crux is a flow of creative discourse through creative conversation and manifestations thereof.

The arts-based research project Six Formats (February 2015 - June 2018) analysed various formats commonly used in relation to arts-based knowledge articulation and/or communication in the present day: publication, exhibition, symposium, lecture-performance, screening, and workshop. Six Formats created situations of dialogue in, on, and between each of its formats. Six Formats facilitated co-processes of ongoing self-reflection and re-articulation aiming for reciprocal attentiveness to the respective needs of the project, its partners, and co-researchers. Six Formats was funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF, PEEK, AR291-G21) and hosted by the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
