Ji Youn Kang is a composer, performer and sound artist and teaches at the Institute of Sonology in The Hague. Most of her music pieces have been composed for both traditional and non-traditional instruments ranging from a solo instrument to a large orchestra. One of her main interests lies in searching for the relationship between musical and physical spaces that she has been exploring with a variety of multichannel systems such as Acousmonium(FR) and Wave Field Synthesis System(192 loudspeakers). Her current research focuses on the sound spatializations in music and performance for live electronics.

    This research, ‘Sound spatialization in live electronic music’, focuses on sound spatialization methodologies in live electronic music where challenges are posed in creating spatial gestures during live performance. The aim is to investigate those challenges by looking into my previous experiences with various multichannel systems, and to develop and experiment with software and hardware tools. The result of this research will be newly composed pieces with two different multichannel systems that contain a creative suggestion for dealing with sound spatialization.

    Through Segments is a sound installation in an unusual interstitial space—the staircase of the Kunsthaus’ Iron House that connects to the “Friendly Alien”. Four artists listen into the storeys using real-time computer algorithms, taking an acoustical image of the visitors’ movements, forming four individual reactions. It is a poetic attempt to think about the distributed, the fragmented, the parallel. During the development phase, the artists work independently, but at the same time they observe and interrogate each other, performing the gesture of a “simultaneous arrival” (Sara Ahmed). They enact a human algorithm, informed by reiteration and duplication but never being identical. The aim is not one “of all converging towards the same, but circulating, making common relaying, relaying back, being relayed” (Isabelle Stengers).
