Supervisors' seminars
The Norwegian Artistic Research School offers at least two free supervisor seminars each year. These seminars provide an opportunity to meet fellow supervisors, share experiences, and discuss relevant themes.
The next supervisor's seminar takes place on 16 March in Lillehammer:
In-person seminar:
Supervisors' seminar - Ethics in Indigenous and non-Eurocentric Artistic practices
When: 16 March 2026 from 14:00 to 18:00
Where: Lillehammer
Ambition:
The aim of the seminar is to reflect on and share experiences of how we engage with Indigenous and non‑Eurocentric perspectives in Artistic Research. We will explore this particularly in relation to supervision.
Background:
The seminar builds on the theme introduced in the panel debate at the Artistic Research Autumn Forum 2025. Over the past few decades, ethics has received significantly increased attention within Artistic Research — as well as in research more generally. Once addressed only sporadically and unsystematically, research ethics is now a mandatory part of the training component for all PhD candidates in Artistic Research in Norway. Supervisors are expected to guide their candidates on ethical matters, and institutions are responsible for ensuring that both staff and students receive appropriate training in ethics.
In parallel with this development, a growing number of Artistic Researchers in Norway are engaging with, or drawing inspiration from, Indigenous practices and non‑Eurocentric methods across fields such as dance, theatre, performance, and music. This raises important questions: How do different Indigenous and non‑Eurocentric traditions approach concepts that European academic environments traditionally describe as “ethics”? How are comparable or related concerns articulated, conceptualised, or practiced? And how might Artistic Research remain attentive to — and learn from — the philosophical foundations of these diverse practices, including Indigenous and non‑Eurocentric approaches?
Format:
Plenary session/input and discussions/work in smaller groups.

Resource
We recommend that you use the Norwegian Artistic Research School´s exposition to find recourses about Artistic Research and supervision. The objective of the Research School is to give PhD candidates an introduction to methods, theory and research ethics, as well as training in disseminating the results of artistic research. The exposition elaborates on these themes, and includes also several project examples and an overview of completed and current PhD projects.
