Almost certainly we will need to think hard about our relations with whatever it is we know, and ask how far the process of knowing it also brings it into being. And as a theme that runs through everything, we should certainly be asking ourselves whether ‘knowing’ is the metaphor that we need. Whether, or when. Perhaps the academy needs to think of other metaphors for its activities – or imagine other activities. (Law 2004: 3)

This is Amandine. My husband discovered xem [1] just before Christmas 2020 and brought xem inside from the cold. At that point, xe was just a recently sprouted almond alone on the street behind our house. This photo was taken within a week of xem being nestled in xyr new bed on our windowsill. Despite these being the darkest days of the year, Amandine grew at a rapid pace. By late January xe was approaching half a metre in height, but xyr trunk was still just a malleable stem bending under the weight of xyr ever-growing leaves. Next to our fireplace were the remnants of last year’s basilico artico plant that I was using for kindling. To support Amandine, I fashioned a stake from one of the dried branches. This kept xem upright during this period of incredible growth.
