Situating Personal Values in Artistic Practice: Towards a Reflective and Reflexive Framework

In what ways can a musician use reflexivity and reflection to situate her personal values in her artistic practice? To answer this question and put the results into practice, the author combined archival and digital research, interviews, and fieldwork. By combining new and found materials inspired by Appalachian folk music and the state of West Virginia, the connected auto-ethnographic case study is a reflective attempt of the author to engage critically with her personal values of empathy, inclusion, and equity in her artistic practice. Using the reflective lenses of the author’s autobiography as an artist, the audience’s reactions, fellow artists comments, and literature review, she was better able to reflexively see her own assumptions and missteps, better allowing her to situate her personal values within her artistic practice. Besides creating a reflective framework by which other artists could consider their own artistic practice, she also found that by taking on new roles outside that of the traditional classically trained performer, she had a greater agency to influence and understand performance elements such as design and form, materials, context, audience, and production process.

How can my positions as an artist, researcher, and teacher continue to be activated and motivate in the theatre production Blindsone through spring 2024?
Gjøsdal as an A/R/Tograph: Research dramaturg and pedagogue responsible for Norwegian Nynorsk as a scenic language in The Cultural Schoolbag-production Blindsone.
Produced by The Centre for Norwegian Language and Literature, The County of Møre & Romsdal, and The National Centre for Norwegian Nynorsk in Education, at Volda University College, and the performing artists Mine Nilay Yalcin, Samir Mahad and Jahanger Ali. The target group is upper secondary school.

A/R/Tography is a hybrid research methodology that emphasizes the three positions Artist (A), Researcher (R) and Teacher (T), and how these can be combined.
The concepts hybrid methodology means that A/R/Tography is both a way of doing research throug/with one's own arts teaching practice, and a way of teaching through an artistic and explorative approach.

The exposition ripples around an interview with Christine Yanco Helland (OsloMet), which is exploring and articulating how she carry out her entangled practice as artist/researcher/teacher. The presentation uses relevant literature to think with.
Christine Yangco Helland is an educated drama teacher, director, and dramaturg, with a master’s degree in fine arts with specialisation in theatre from the University of Agder, Norway. Helland has a burning commitment to diversity and inclusion. In addition to working with professional productions, Helland is motivated by involving children and young people, non-professional, and marginalised groups.
The exhibition and the interview uses rhizomatic thinking. And so does my own work and production within the methodology and thematics.

Een cartografie over de spanningsveld in mbo mode en beeldende vorming die tijdens mijn afstudeerstage van mijn docentenopleiding ervaarde.
Waar aan de ene kant de onderwijsinstelling vol inzet op nieuwe en innovatieve (fysieke) leeromgevingen. En aan de andere kant studenten behoefte hebben aan de menselijke maat bij docenten en meer aandacht willen voor creatieve vakken om zich te ontplooien, te experimenteren en vorm te geven aan hun eigen verhaal.

Documentación del proceso de investigación pedagógica en danza inclusiva llamado Zona de Creación Accesible
Para el 2020 ConCuerpos ha estructurado una investigación pedagógica a profundidad sobre el desarrollo de técnicas en un contexto inclusivo. Realizaremos 4 laboratorios y 4 periodos de asimilación en donde los miembros de la compañía tendrán el tiempo de estructurar entrenamientos que respondan a sus necesidades y deseos específicos.
Partimos de la pregunta ¿Qué es ser un/a bailarín/a de nivel profesional en la danza inclusiva? Esta pregunta se aborda de manera subjetiva, concretando competencias específicas que se desean alcanzar. Estudiando técnicas como Piso Móvil, Danza Moderna, Danza Contacto y Pilates, cada quien desarrollará su propio lenguaje, principios y ejercicios para originar una técnica propia.
Esta investigación pretende aportar a la profundización de nuestro campo, abriendo posibilidades concretas para la profesionalización de bailarines diversos
