Ethical considerations of transcultural composition

Through an artistic research process, I examine the ethical issues that arise in transcultural music composition, a context familiar to the students of the Global Music department at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. Through reflexive autoethnography and musical analysis of the composition used for my Bachelor concert, I look at the questions of cultural appropriation vs. appreciation, and imitation vs. plagiarism. In the discussion I use a reflexive and investigative process for navigating these questions, and in the conclusion I expose my reflections and ideas on how to tackle this elusive yet important subject.
Oh Doom is Coming. The First Year of Understanding Eco-Anxiety.

Audience reactions such as “Oh, doom is coming” reveal the emotional weight of eco-anxiety and highlight the need for approaches that go beyond fear. During the first year of understanding eco-anxiety, I explored how eco-anxiety manifests in daily life and how it shapes collective processes within a developing neighbourhood. I also explored how integrating qualitative audience research with artistic research can deepen our understanding of eco-anxiety and contribute to the development of artistic coding as a method. The artistic interventions: 1. The Birds, 2. Bring Back the Birds, 3. Omgaan met Water, 4. Stay Safe in the Media Atmospheres, 5. Artist Residency Oba Next Sluisbuurt, 6. Kunstenaarskennis and 7. Participatiewensen, combined with conceptual reflections of them, demonstrated that understanding eco-anxiety involves questioning, prompting and exploring the affect and emotions that emerge in relation to eco-anxiety.

ARTikulationen interweaves in-depth presentations of very recent artistic research and findings, a festival character, and a mini-symposium – this year on matters of interdisciplinarity and interconnectedness of research practices with the (sound) environment, nature, and other living beings („Researching Across“).

On the Sound Image and the Radical Plurality of the Audible

This essay postulates a novel notion of the sound image that – rather than conceiving it as an artefact, a visual surrogate or an exclusively mental entity – defines it as an instance of a process or an operation, unfolding within material circuits, technical infrastructures, and collective protocols. Based upon the image theory developed by Gilbert Simondon in his book Imagination and Invention, this notion enables an account of the variable nature of the audible in a post-anthropocentric context as intrinsic to the forms in which sensorial engagement takes places in singular material constellations.
Materiality as a Creative Practice of Musical Instruments: Makers’ Perspectives

This video essay discusses how contemporary artists might directly address some of the philosophical and political challenges of a material approach to instrumentality through creative practice. I present and discuss the practical approaches taken by musicians who create and collaborate with instruments as a central part of their work: Khabat Abas and Sam Underwood. In examining their creative practice both creating and working with musical instruments, I examine how these artists navigate the agential and material aspects of the instruments and systems they create, in parallel with the conceptual ideas that they bring to and derive from such systems.

Andy Birtwistle’s introduction to this special issue addresses the question "what is sonic materiality?" by examining how both "new" and "old" materialisms offer productive frameworks for conceptualizing sound's material dimensions. Drawing on work by Cox, Voegelin, and Cobussen, alongside critiques from Goh, Thompson, and Campbell, the article proposes understanding sound's materiality through texture, temporal flow, and spatiality. By engaging with Structural/Materialist film theory and creative sonic practices, Birtwistle discusses how materiality intersects with aesthetics, agency, and ethics in sound. The introduction argues that exploring sonic materiality opens new avenues for understanding sound across environmental soundscapes, artistic practices, and cultural contexts.
