This practice-based PhD, In Search of Now-Time: live-editing as a mode of research, explores the intrinsic relationship between revolts, time and the moving image. In continuation of my artistic practice within the last 10 years, I have been focusing on moving images as the main apparatus for the representation of historical time, and on video live-editing as a materialist investigation into the very temporalization of history. While drawing on media theories, revolutionary theory and philosophical debates on historicity, temporality and representation, I have immersed my research into the temporal aspects of revolts – from the immediate and rather spontaneous revolts to the long struggles that are slow moving and long in the making. The larger question I have pursued is how one can use moving images to capture a historical process still unfolding messily in the present? And in doing so, how to not predetermine what will be allowed to count as a political image, that is to say, an image of the present set in history? In a proliferation of temporalities, how to hold on to time other than through a melancholic attachment to the past or a passive mode of waiting for something, anything, to change?

In Search of Now-Time: live-editing as a mode of research utforsker det iboende forholdet mellom opprør, tid og levende bilder. I fortsettelsen av min kunstneriske praksis de siste 10 årene har jeg fokusert på levende bilder som aparatus for representasjon av historisk tid, og på video-live-redigering som en materialistisk undersøkelse av selve temporaliseringen av historien. Mens jeg trekker på medieteorier, revolusjonær teori og filosofiske debatter om historisitet, temporalitet og representasjon, har jeg fordypet forskningen min i de temporale aspektene ved opprør – fra de umiddelbare og ganske spontane opprørene til de lange kampene som er langsomme og konstant underveis. Det større spørsmålet jeg har forfulgt er hvordan man kan bruke levende bilder til å fange en historisk prosess som fortsatt utfolder seg i nåtiden? Og hvordan kan man unngå å forhåndsbestemme hva som skal telles som et politisk bilde, det vil si et bilde av nåtiden i historien? I en tid med multiplisering av forskjellige temporaliteter, hvordan holde fast ved tiden på annen måte enn gjennom en melankolsk tilknytning til fortiden eller en passiv måte å vente på at noe, hva som helst, skal forandre seg?
